pregnant woman curious about the types of abortion

Facing an unexpected pregnancy can feel overwhelming. With so much information out there, it’s easy to feel lost. We’re here to simplify the process by breaking down the different types of abortion.

Understanding your options is the first step in making a decision that’s right for you. Let’s dive into the two methods available, decipher the medical language, and empower you with the knowledge you need during this crucial time.

Two Types of Abortion

There are two types of procedures: medical and surgical. Which one is available to you depends largely on your gestational age or how far along you are. We’ll discuss the other factors and what you need to know about each.

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion involves using two powerful drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. These drugs are typically taken at home without direct supervision. Medical abortion is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.

First, mifepristone is taken. This drug initiates the abortion process by blocking progesterone. Next, misoprostol is taken. This drug causes uterine contractions, leading to cramping and expelling the pregnancy through the vagina.

After taking these drugs, you will likely experience vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping, which can sometimes be severe.

Medical abortion includes side effects like nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, headache, and diarrhea. The risks of this procedure include:

  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • An ongoing pregnancy (if the procedure doesn’t work)
  • An incomplete abortion (which may need to be followed by surgical abortion)

Surgical Abortion

A surgical abortion involves a combination of drugs, medical instruments, or suction to end a pregnancy. It’s done in a hospital or clinic and usually later in pregnancy.

The process begins with opening the cervix to allow medical tools into the uterus to remove the pregnancy. Early on, suction and scraping tools are used. Later in pregnancy, forceps are needed to remove larger parts of the pregnancy.

The risks of a surgical abortion include:

  • Damage to the cervix
  • Uterine perforation
  • Infection
  • Scarring of the inside of the uterus
