How the Abortion Pill Works 

The abortion pill is also known as a medical abortion and involves taking two different drugs at different times. 

The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain the pregnancy, and the second drug, misoprostol, taken one to two days later, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue. 

Cramping and bleeding are expected side effects of the abortion pill, and the intensity can vary, with some women reporting them stronger than expected. 

The abortion pill is approved by the FDA through ten weeks of gestation.

The Risks of the Abortion Pill 

Like any medication, the abortion pill carries potential risks.

These risks include:

• An incomplete abortion.
• Heavy or prolonged bleeding. 
• Infection. 
• Fever. 
• Digestive issues.

Why Medical Screening Matters 

Taking the abortion pill without a medical screening increases the risk of complications. An ultrasound shows the location of the pregnancy, if a fetal heartbeat is detected, and how far along the pregnancy is (the gestational age). 

All these details affect your options and health. An ectopic pregnancy is when the pregnancy implants outside of the uterus and requires urgent medical attention. It cannot be treated with the abortion pill. 

A miscarriage may have already occurred even after receiving a positive pregnancy test result, because hCG levels can remain elevated after pregnancy loss. An ultrasound can check for signs of cardiac activity.
