A woman uses her laptop to learn about open, semi-open, and closed adoption.

If you are considering adoption, you may be wondering what the process would actually look like. Would you choose your child’s adoptive family? Could you stay in contact? What if you want privacy?

These are important questions, and you deserve the opportunity to explore them before making a decision. Modern adoption can involve different levels of communication and connection, allowing you to consider what would work best for you and your child.

The Women’s Resource Center is here to help you understand your options and connect you with licensed adoption agencies in your community. While we do not arrange adoptions, we offer a no-cost, confidential place to ask questions and talk openly with someone who cares.

We also provide no-cost pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds so you can find out more details about how your pregnancy is progressing. Get in touch with us to make your appointment today.

What Adoption Can Look Like

Adoption is not one single arrangement. As the birth mother, you will be able to choose the adoptive family, decide how much communication you would like to have, and create a personalized adoption plan that reflects your preferences.

You can ask questions about the process, understand your legal rights, and learn about the support available to you. The adoptive family often covers pregnancy healthcare and legal expenses.

The type and amount of assistance can vary, so it is important to ask a licensed adoption professional what support may be available to you.

The Three Main Types of Adoption

The three types of adoption plans are open, semi-open, and closed. The main difference between them is how much contact and identifying information may be shared between the birth mother and the adoptive family.

Open Adoption

Open adoption allows for ongoing contact between the birth mother and the adoptive family. Depending on the agreement, communication may include phone calls, letters, photos, or in-person visits.

Semi-Open Adoption

Semi-open adoption allows for some communication while providing more privacy than an open arrangement. Communication may take place through an adoption agency or another agreed-upon third party. Updates such as letters or photos may be shared without the same level of direct contact.

Closed Adoption

A closed adoption generally means that identifying information is not exchanged between the birth parents and adoptive family, and adoption records are sealed.

Although this type of adoption is less common today, some people choose it when they prefer to keep those details private.
