What Is an Ultrasound? 

An ultrasound is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create a visual image of what is going on inside the body. 

The scan is performed by a trained team member using a handheld device called a transducer. The images will then be displayed on the screen, and the details will be explained to you. Unlike X-rays, an ultrasound does not use any radiation. 

The Types Of Ultrasounds 

There are two main types of ultrasounds used during early pregnancy. 

An abdominal ultrasound is performed over the lower abdomen and works by applying a water-based gel and moving the transducer across the abdomen to produce images. This is more commonly used in later pregnancy.

A transvaginal ultrasound can be used as early as 5 weeks of gestation. In this scan, a smaller transducer is inserted into the vagina to create images of the uterus. 

At the Women’s Resource Center, our nurse manager performs our abdominal ultrasounds and provides information about what is shown so you can see whether the pregnancy is developing as expected.

What an Ultrasound Shows You 

An ultrasound provides you with important details about your pregnancy that a test alone cannot. 

The details include:

• The location of the pregnancy – Which is important to rule out if you are having an ectopic pregnancy. This is where the egg implants outside of the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube, and needs urgent medical attention. 
• How far along you are, which can affect your options. 
• Whether the pregnancy is viable – This means if there is a heartbeat and the pregnancy is developing as expected. Around 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. A pregnancy test can still be positive even if you have already had a miscarriage due to lingering hormone levels of hCG.
