Regret Taking the First Abortion Pill?

If you’ve taken the first drug in the abortion pill regimen, mifepristone, and are feeling uncertain, you’re not alone. Many women have found themselves in a similar place, wondering if it’s possible to continue their pregnancy.

You may still have time. At the Women’s Resource Center, we’re here to help you learn more about a protocol called APR and connect you with the support you need.

What Is Abortion Pill Reversal?

Abortion pill reversal, or APR, is a protocol that may allow you to continue a pregnancy after taking the first drug in a medical abortion.

The abortion pill process typically involves two drugs. The first drug, mifepristone, works by blocking progesterone, a hormone your body needs to sustain a pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and complete the process. APR uses additional progesterone given orally, vaginally, or by injection to try to reverse the effects of mifepristone before the second drug is taken.

Is It Safe? What Does the Research Say?

Progesterone has been safely used for decades to support early pregnancy, and studies suggest that APR has helped many women continue their pregnancies. Research indicates a success rate between 64 and 68 percent.

It’s important to understand that APR isn’t guaranteed, but it may be successful if you’ve only taken mifepristone. Timing plays a key role. Starting the protocol as soon as possible, ideally within 24 to 72 hours, offers the best chance for success, though it may still be effective beyond that window in some cases.
