Verify Critical Details With an Ultrasound
A positive pregnancy test is just the beginning. You’ll need more information to fully understand your options and take the next steps, starting with an ultrasound.
At the Women’s Resource Center, we’re here to walk you through the ultrasound process and ensure you feel informed and supported every step of the way.
What an Ultrasound Reveals
Ultrasound technology uses low-frequency sound waves to create images of your body’s internal structures. During pregnancy, this tool helps confirm vital information and gives you a clearer understanding of what’s happening inside your body.
At the Women’s Resource Center, we offer abdominal ultrasounds. During this scan, a gel is applied to your abdomen, and a small, wand-like device called a transducer is gently moved across your stomach to produce images on a screen.
This scan can help determine three key details about your pregnancy:
1. Viability
Is there a detectable heartbeat? Is the pregnancy progressing as expected? As many as 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. An ultrasound can help assess whether your pregnancy is developing normally or whether there are signs of miscarriage that may require medical follow-up.
2. Gestational Age
How far along are you? Knowing the gestational age is important when considering your options. For instance, the abortion pill is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation.
3. Location
Is the pregnancy located inside the uterus? In rare cases, a pregnancy can implant outside the uterus, a condition known as ectopic pregnancy. This is a medical emergency; an ultrasound helps detect it so you can get the care you need immediately.
