Create Boundaries
Your partner may have strong feelings about the pregnancy. They may be worried about finances, parenting, your relationship, or how having a baby could change your lives.
Your partner’s feelings can be part of the conversation, but pressure, threats, manipulation, or attempts to force you into a decision are not healthy.
If you feel comfortable and safe doing so, let your partner know that you need time and space to understand your own feelings and consider your options. You do not have to make a decision immediately simply because someone else wants an answer.
If your partner’s behavior makes you feel threatened, controlled, or unsafe, prioritize your safety and reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Remember, this is your decision.
Understand Your Options
When someone is pressuring you toward one option, it can be easy to feel like you do not have any other choices. Taking time to learn about all of your pregnancy options can help you make a decision based on your own circumstances and values.
Your options include: parenting, adoption, and abortion. Each option comes with different considerations.
Maybe you want to parent but are worried about finances, housing, or school. Learning about the resources and support available can help you feel more confident about what parenting could look like.
Women’s Resource Center offers no-cost parenting and life skill classes, support groups, material support (such as diapers, formula, and baby clothing), and community referrals tailored to your needs.
Understanding your options does not mean you have to make a decision right away. It simply gives you the information you need so you can make an informed decision about your pregnancy.
Get the Details You Need
Before making any pregnancy decision, it is important to understand how your pregnancy is developing. A pregnancy test detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), but a positive result does not provide information about:
- Your pregnancy’s gestational age (how far along you are)
- The location of the pregnancy
- Whether the pregnancy is progressing
A limited ultrasound at our center can provide important information about these details.
Knowing where the pregnancy is located is particularly important because it can identify an ectopic pregnancy. This is when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus and requires medical treatment. An ectopic pregnancy cannot be treated with abortion drugs.
An ultrasound can also help determine how far along your pregnancy is. The abortion pill is approved by the FDA through ten weeks of gestation. Taking these drugs beyond this timeframe may increase the risk of complications. Elective abortion is also prohibited under Mississippi law.
Having accurate information about your pregnancy can help you better understand your situation before making a decision about what to do next.
