Woman thinking about getting an ultrasound

Facing an unexpected pregnancy is by no means easy. You might know that you don’t feel ready to parent and are exploring your options, including adoption and abortion.

Adoption can be a choice for women who want to continue their pregnancies and give their children a better future, even if they feel as if they can’t be the ones to raise them.

At the Women’s Resource Center, we provide factual information about both adoption and abortion, free from judgment, so that you can make an informed decision about your pregnancy.

Adoption Gives Your Child an Opportunity

Adoption can be a choice when you don’t feel ready to parent but still want to continue your pregnancy. It can be a deeply personal decision, allowing you to consider what is best for both you and your child.

If you feel you may not be able to provide a stable future at this time, many adoptive families are waiting to be given a chance to raise a child and provide them the opportunities you would love them to have.

It Can Be an Alternative to Parenting

Parenting can be very overwhelming, especially if the father of your child doesn’t want to be involved, you are still in school, or you are not in the right financial position. These are all valid and real concerns.

Adoption is different from parenting. While you carry the pregnancy to term, you are not legally responsible for raising the child once they have been placed with their adoptive family.

You are also never expected to pay for an adoption agency, and support is provided throughout the process, emotionally, financially, and physically.

You Have Control Over the Type of Adoption

Modern adoption is not like the adoption you may have been used to seeing in the movies, and now allows flexibility over the relationship you can have with your child.

There are three main types of adoption plans to explore, including:

  • Open adoption – This is where you can have an ongoing relationship with the child and adoptive family with direct communication.
  • Semi-open – Communication is done via a third party, and identifying information is limited.
  • Closed – The birth parents remain anonymous. Although less common, some women find this arrangement helps them heal and move forward.

There is no right plan to choose; it’s about what feels comfortable to you and what you would like a relationship with your child to look like. Your emotions during this time may feel complex, no matter which option you are considering.

Know the Facts Before You Decide

Abortion can come with risks that are worth considering. Some of the side effects of abortion can be more severe than women expect, including cramping, vaginal bleeding, and pain.

Potential risks also include infection, an incomplete abortion, and heavy bleeding. It’s worth taking time to understand the mental effects of abortion, too, with studies showing that the abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.

Before making any pregnancy decision, getting your pregnancy confirmed with an ultrasound is important, as it provides medical details about your pregnancy, including the location, how far along you are, and viability, all of which can impact your options.

The Women’s Resource Center offers free pregnancy testing and ultrasounds to give you the clarity you need to move forward.
