Understanding Abortion: Get the Facts First
Facing an unexpected pregnancy can feel overwhelming. That’s why exploring your options and understanding the facts is essential before making any decisions.
Abortion is a medical procedure that comes with both short- and long-term considerations, so being well-informed is key to protecting your health and making a confident choice.
At the Women’s Resource Center, we do not perform or refer for abortions. Still, we provide accurate, evidence-based information in a supportive, confidential environment so you can make the best decision for yourself.
Types of Abortion and What They Involve
How far along you are in your pregnancy often determines the type of abortion procedure available to you. The two primary methods are medical and surgical abortion, each with its own side effects and potential risks.
Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill)
This option involves taking two drugs that work together to end a pregnancy. It is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.
- The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which supports the pregnancy’s development.
- The second drug, misoprostol, causes uterine contractions and bleeding, which expels the pregnancy.
Common side effects include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Chills
- Fever
- Headaches
Potential risks may include:
- Ongoing or incomplete abortion (which may require a surgical procedure)
- Infection
- Heavy, prolonged bleeding
- Digestive symptoms
Surgical Abortion
A surgical abortion involves using medical instruments, suction, and anesthesia or sedation to remove the pregnancy from the uterus.
Afterward, some bleeding or cramping is expected, but potential risks include:
- Perforation of the uterus (a surgical tool may puncture the uterine wall)
- Cervical damage
- Scarring within the uterus, which can lead to painful periods or infertility
- Infection
