Many women wonder why ultrasound is even necessary. You’ll be surprised at the information you get from this one simple screening. Besides, at the Women’s Resource Center, we offer complimentary ultrasounds, so why not take advantage of them? It’s just one more way we’re taking care of you.
Why you need an ultrasound
Did you know the Mayo Clinic says nearly 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage? The number could even be higher because many miscarriages happen so early in a pregnancy that a woman may not know she’s pregnant. You can still receive a positive pregnancy test result days or even weeks after a miscarriage, so it’s important to have an ultrasound.
If you’re considering abortion, you will need ultrasound confirmation before scheduling your appointment. There is no point in visiting an abortion clinic if you have already miscarried.
How ultrasound works
At the Women’s Resource Center, our nurse manager will be conducting the ultrasound. She will place a gel-like substance on your abdomen and rub an instrument called a transducer over the gel. The transducer picks up echoes of the sound waves inside your abdomen.
The echoes are electronically translated into black and white dots. Those dots reveal an image of the inside of your uterus. The nurse can assist you in understanding the image on the computer screen.
What ultrasound tells you
In addition to knowing whether you’ve miscarried or not, ultrasound gives you even more valuable information. By discovering if your pregnancy is viable (meaning you have not miscarried), you will better understand the situation. You will also learn how far along your pregnancy is. The number of weeks you’ve been pregnant can determine the date of conception, your potential due date, and your eligibility for options.
You also need to know where your pregnancy is located. Although not a regular occurrence, a pregnancy sometimes locates outside of the uterus. This is known as ectopic pregnancy and can be life-threatening. You must visit a medical doctor as soon as you discover an ectopic pregnancy.
